How to Control Overly Dynamic Vocals (My Simple Method)

🎙️ How to Control Overly Dynamic Vocals (My Simple Method)

If you’ve ever recorded vocals and noticed they sound too quiet in some parts and too loud in others, you’re dealing with overly dynamic vocals.

This can make mixing frustrating. But don’t worry—today I’ll show you the exact method I use to fix it. It’s simple, works in FL Studio or any DAW, and gives your vocals that professional Afrobeat-ready polish.

🔹 Step 1: Clean Up Your Recording

Before compression or EQ, make sure your vocals are noise-free.
Most of us record in bedrooms, living rooms, or even cars—not professional studios. That means background hum, clicks, and pops sneak into the track.

👉 Here’s what I do:

  • Record 5–10 seconds of silence before singing (captures the noise profile).

  • Use a noise remover plugin to reduce hiss or hum.

  • Manually cut out pops or unwanted sounds.

💡 Tip: Clean vocals always sound stronger and prevent problems later in the chain.

🔹 Step 2: Compare Raw vs. Clean

Once you’ve removed the noise, listen back:

  • Raw Vocal: uneven, messy, background noise

  • Clean Vocal: smooth, stronger, and easier to process

Even this first step makes a big difference!

🔹 Step 3: My Secret Weapon – Waves MV2

Now let’s tackle the dynamics.

Instead of stacking multiple compressors, I use Waves MV2. Why?
Because it does upward and downward compression at the same time.

  • Upward compression = boosts the quiet parts

  • Downward compression = controls the loud peaks

The result → a balanced, thick, and smooth vocal that doesn’t sound over-compressed.

⚡ Just be gentle with the settings. Small moves = big results.

🔹 Step 4: Before & After

🎧 When you compare:

  • Before MV2: vocals jump around in volume, hard to control

  • After MV2: vocals sound consistent, thick, and polished

This makes it easier to fit the vocals into your beat without killing the vibe.

🔹 Step 5: Test in the Mix

Never trust solo vocals alone. Drop them back in with your beat and effects.

You’ll notice how much better the processed vocals cut through the mix while staying natural.

✅ Final Thoughts

Overly dynamic vocals don’t have to ruin your mix. With this MV2 method, you can:
✔️ Control dynamics
✔️ Keep vocals thick and smooth
✔️ Get pro results faster
